Nielsen’s New Numbers Out for Digital Media

Nielsen, the market research and television ratings company, recently released some interesting facts about the state of media consumption in America.  Ironically it was released during CES.

According to Nielsen, there are over 195 million active Internet users and mobile phone use has sky-rocketed to around 223 million.  As parents of teens you won’t be surprised to know that 73% of homes has some sort of gaming device.

Television Still Rules the Roost

While I know many parents are concerned about video game usage, it’s the television that still has the average American hooked.  They watch (on average) 31.5 hours of television per week.  That’s about four hours/day.  If you’re worried about screen time, that would be a good place to start!

Online Video Watching

I don’t know if you’ve noticed it in your house but in my house, my teens watch almost 60% of their entertainment on their laptop.  Most of the time it’s online entertainment but sometimes it’s using the dvd functionality.  This emerging trend is supported by Nielsen in a different report (see their chart below)
