Advertising, PR Pitches and All..

I love the internet and I tend to gravitate to blogs for source material over websites.  Why? Because I’m a jaded Kiss of perfectionex-advertising/marketing person.  And, it’s hard for me to believe that a travel website is not biased in promoting the XYZ hotel if XYZ hotel is advertising prominently on their site.   I’ve spent the last 9 months attempting to fine-tune the essence of what I want and look for, in a blog.  When I started, it was for a simple reason, I didn’t think anyone was writing about teenagers.  I knew what I didn’t want.  I didn’t want whining and complaining to be center stage (I still reserve the right to complain when necessary) I didn’t want to make this blog about making money.  And, I didn’t want to talk about issues without presenting current data and/or solutions.

I did want to be able to mention companies and products that I thought were important to the discussion or that I am interested in OR that affect my life or the lives of my teens.  I have tried to be transparent about my relationship with companies or products (I have none).   As I come up on my year anniversary, I will begin taking advertising on my blog.  Only advertising that is compatible with my editorial philosophy which is to say, “I won’t write or pitch your product or company just because you advertise”.

This blog is only useful to people if it is my perspective.  You may not agree with my opinion.   I may make mistakes (which I’d hope you would point out) BUT, you can be assured, it is MINE.  So, I will not be taking advertising from companies that don’t make sense.  I will not be pitching companies in my writing just because they advertise.   I will try to bring you any additional information or opportunities afforded me from advertiser relationships.  I’d like to learn about new products before they hit the market and write about how it might affect our lives.  I’d like to stay up to date on changes as they occur.  All of this helps the currency of my writing and hopefully makes this blog a place you will find useful.

My friend who is American, married to a Scot, living in England wrote a great post about PR pitches.   Since I’m not one to steal content – I’m just going to send you over to her “house” so you can read what she has to say on the subject.  I know it was written in March, but it has a timeless message.    Besides, I’m a firm believer in not trying to do work that’s been done right to begin with!  I agree with what she says and more.  So pour a cup of tea and visit A ModernMother.

Hello from the UK and thanks for the intro.

It’s so hard to get the advertising/PR thing right. Mummy blogging is just heating up here and we are trying to make sense of it all. Lot of learning going on and it’s nice to have our American counterparts to learn from.
