It automatically reads texts and/or emails when the app is turned on, and can automatically respond. Now i just put my phone in my cup holder while I drive and don't even worry about reaching for it. I've written a follow-up and will continue to add follow-ups on texting. It is a hot topic but is also confusing for parents (at least me) because we really don't know who they are talking to and when. It's also so absorbing and omni-present that it's hard to control. We don't want to "cut" our kids off from socializing or their friends...and guess what? that's what you're doing when you stop the texting. So...controls are in order but boy is it tough.
