16th Birthday Parties

teen boy's sixteenth birthdayRemember the Sweet Sixteen?

Several of my daughter’s friends have turned 16 recently.  One had a huge bash at a private club, complete with band, chocolate fountain and about 150 friends and relatives.  Several others have been discussing the pros and cons of the “16th Birthday Party” and suggestions from a beach party to a party with boys have been bantered about.

The 16th birthday (especially for a girl) has always been a sentimental birthday and an opportunity to throw a big party (if you have the money and inclination).  If not a party, then maybe a larger than normal gift, usually pertaining to the newly-gained driver’s license.  Our “D” day for our daughter is May.  I really don’t want to think about this now, I’ve just returned from a visit to the DMV (like no other) to gain the beloved “Driver’s Permit”.  So, my mind is elsewhere.  But, I’m curious. Does anyone else still celebrate the 16th birthday in large, celebratory ways????

My 13yo daughter has a recurring fantasy of a Great Gatsby-themed Sweet 16 party. With my aversion to party/event planning for any group larger than 5, I smile sweetly and say, “That would be fun, huh?”

Now that we have passed the obligatory kiddie-birthday party stage, I consider myself done with such things. Just one more duty, as I see it…
I have one big bash per kid remaining, and I am hoping that said bash will be the wedding!

It seems limos are in for 16 year olds now. I thought it was rough doing the “dress up” parties!
